I started with really nice premium live rock and my tank cycled in a matter of days (YMMV), so I like having a higher percentage of really good live rock to begin. Mixing in more dead/base rock will be easier on the wallet, but impatience is something you'll find a lot of in this hobby and me being no different, I wanted to get up and running quick :).

As far as hitchhikers, you may or may not get anything good or bad, feel free to post pics of things and we'll make sure to steer you in the right direction. I loved the fact that I had little sponges and feather dusters worms on my rock, it was pretty awesome to see this random life. But I do understand having a negative exp with a hitchhiker would make someone wish they had started with more dead rock.

Either way just make sure you are testing for the cycle (I'm assuming you know what to look for) and make sure you are 100% done prior to adding any livestock.

I have ordered a couple of things that are on the way:

    Reef Octopus BH1000
2 Sunsun power heads w/ magnet base
    1 ebay refractometer
    API Master Test Kit

To go with my 75g tank and my Spectrapure RO/DI unit

    Almost there....!
