So i have very porous rock, and i was thinking of drilling a hole into it and placing an air stone in it. but i read things online about air stones being bad for saltwater aquariums. Fish like choking on bubbles or something like that.

Are air stones really bad in saltwater???

I don't think so... and they are always adjustable.

I like to believe it will help pH.

I use one in my sump - in my fuge - for more flow.

i think the main problem is the salt creep issue it creates. fish will be fine.

Salt creep shouldn't be an issue, i have glass tops that i clean every week when i do water changes already.

Looks like I've got a new project! :)

Many many years ago I tried an air wand and the salt creep was terrible. The only time I use an air stone now is when power goes off and my automatic emergency air pumps kick on.

One of the silliest myths out there about the salt hobby ..Some say the bubble irritate the gills ,,thats bologna ..What, theres no bubbles in the ocean currents ?
I have tons of bubbles going into my DT,,i honestly just like the way they look ,and like said ,it helps with oxygen, I get little creep.
You can see my DT and bubbles here.

While I agree that airstones are not essential, the myth that bubbles are harmful is ridiculous. In the early days, most everything we had for filtration was driven by airstones. If you didn't have at least an inch of foam on the surface of the entire DT, something wasn't adjusted correctly, and our livestock couldn't have cared less about the bubbles.

    NIce replies,

Do you have a protien skimmer? Then your water gets plenty of 'air' going thru it.
So your fish ever gasp and hand out right at the top?

I had never really heard that somehow the bubbles where bad for the fish.
Guess I haven't heard it all- yet anyways ;)

I personally wouldn't use covers on my tank- for lots or reasons.
I also have a PS, and therefore, wouldn't use an airstone- not in the DT anyways-
    salt creep, etc.
But, I do see how you could use it for an 'effect' or something,
and the DT in Finding Nemo was SW and had airstones, right?, so it couldn't be that bad:rolleyes:

The main thing i hear, wrong with using glass tops, like i do, is, gas exchange. But, I've cut out sections and glued down some mesh, and i have a canister filter running for that exact reason. They get cleaned weekly when i do my water changes. I've seen no issues yet.
I do have an elegant firefish, I've heard they're jumpers, and i plan on getting a resplendent anthias, i hear they are jumpers too. That's my main reason for having glass tops.
