My first post and glad to have joined the great reef comunity and this forum.

Old time in the saltwater fish tank hobby and only 6 months into the reef tank deal, so far so good, only that I've had some pretty persistente red/brown algae problem.

two weeks ago I started using Algafix marine and in the last three days I have seen a bizzare turn of events, I can see the red/brown algae in the morning when I get up, then as the day goes by and the light of the tank interacts with it you can see it increase, so far so good and logical, right?

The weird part comes when I turn off the lights and the algae disappears completely in about an hour, only to reappear the next morning as strong as ever without the benefit of the light . I'm puzzled.

It's cyano bacteria, not algae, also why the Algaefix didn't take care of it. Welcome to 3Reef!

You are correct, wrong to call it an algae.

Are you familiar with this disappearing and overnight comeback of the cyano bacteria problem and what may cause such strange behavior?

Also besides keeping a clean tank, is there a product that could really help with the problem? I read something about BOYD CHEMI-CLEAN on this forum but haven't tried it.

It's common to get a cyano outbreak after using Algae fix. Nothing for the Cyano to compete with. As long as your water parameters are good, it'll go away on it's own. Personally, I wouldn't use a chemical to get rid of it.
