I'm trying to catch my flametail blenny for several reasons. #1 is because it doesn't eat algae like my bi-colors always did.

once i catch it, I plan on swapping it out for a bicolor.

But I'm thinking maybe a different fish?

So I'm looking for a fish that will

    • (likely) eat algae (GHA),
    • that's *not* a blenny,
    • reef safe,
    • can live with a pair of clowns,
    • in a 55 gallon, 4 ft tank.

it's not a ton of algae, not enough to sustain a fish. so it can't *only* eat algae.

ideas? I'm pretty open to trying something new.

thanks everyone. karma for awesome ideas

Your best bet is a small yellow tang, Mine loved when I had GHA he eat most of it. The hermits eat the rest. Hope this helps :)

Aren't both of those rated for tanks bigger than a 55? I'm wanting something I can keep. I'm not real big on fish that will outgrow my tank...

If that foxface is fine in a 55, I like the idea... but pretty sure it's not... are there special species that are?

Peredhil most sites do indicate 75 gallon or bigger for the foxface
so if your looking for a long term fish , this isnt it

I have seen small ones in 4ft tanks , and they do mow down GHA ( but they seem to stop at the last cm - so basically they are like sheep , the GHA gets a haircut rather than completely removed

Steve beat me to the punch here. I'd try this, since it'll set you back all of 10 dollars.

Try a dwarf angel, they constantly graze on the rocks and back glass. I just bought a CB and he is always eating what he can. Plus, they don't grow bigger then 4" so it should do very well in your tank.

IME black mollies will only peck off the GHA every blue moon that i have noticed they will not remove anything really or be able to keep up with it. that being said you would have to have about 5 or so to notice any difference why don't you try a sea hare? or is there to little GHA?
