I inherited a coral (Not even positive what it is), the problem is that it had a nasty hair algae growing in-between the polyps. My tank has an impressive array of “Janitors” but none of them seem interested in cleaning this one.

Can anyone identify the specific algae and what would consume it??

Looks like some form of filamentous algae. IME, my mexican turbo's and eyelash blenny love the stuff. My hippo takes nibbles of it too

That's the same GHA that I have been fighting in my tank for a year now. I pluck it off gently when it gets too long and make sure none of it gets released. I only do that when I am doing a water change, where the hose will suck the GHA as soon as I pull it. I just added mexican turbos on Sunday and they are cleaning it off nicely. My rocks look raw where the stuff has been eaten, but it's nice to see purple rock and not brown/green. Try a couple and see if they do any damage to the GHA you have.

Sorry to say but I would get it out of your tank ASAP! Put it in a bucket or if you can set up something like a QT and use Algaefix or some other remedy and kill ALL the hair before re-introducing it to the display.

I tried Algaefix on the stuff in my tank and it did nothing to it. It got rid of the brown diatoms though. The turbos are eating the GHA like it's candy though. :) But I agree that it should be quaranteened to prevent spread.

Thanks all for the advice :)

Coral is being moved to a 50g quarantine tank, lawnmower blennies and Mexican turbo snails are on the way, they well be added to the cleanup crew that is already present in the quarantine tank. I will be curious to see if the new additions will go after this particular GHA.

I'll let everyone know either way ::)

Looks like derbesia. Shouldn't be hard to find something with an appetite for it.

pay attention to your PO4,Si,NO2,3 those will fuel the algae. raising the dKH will minimize the growth

You said Lawnmower BlennieS. I would be careful if your planning on adding more than one Lawnmower.
