So, I'm here, asking questions about the worst thing ever in my opinion.
First off, if you have chemistry issues, does algae grow all over the rock or just where the light hits the rock? I'm having algae growth but I think it could be cause by lights. my numbers are perfect. Bought a phosban reactor and media 2 weeks ago still having issues.
Second i must be lucky because I have 3 colors of algae growing. Green hair( seems to only be growing on the substrate), Brownish/reddish film algae ( growing on almost all the LR but only where the light hits) and some That looks to be a dark purple( growing in small patches all over) Can someone explain this crap to me and maybe give me some direction to fix this issue. Thanks

the purple is caraline algae, but wo an id cant be sure.

    is the tank fairly new?

if the rock was bought live it could have have phosphate in the rock its self.

    how much do you feed?

what is your CUC look like?

Deep purple could be Cyano if it's more hairy or snotty in nature.

    Brown is Likely diatoms

Not sure two weeks is long enough to see a major turn around with a phosban reactor.

Your readings will often read 0 on phosphates and nitrates because the algae are consuming it.
What kind of water are you using? Tap, RO, RO/DI? Tap water is often the culprit of nuisance algae. How much do you feed? do you think you over feed?

Knowing how new the tank is as stated above will also help determine other likely causes.
Algae grows in light, Diatoms can grow in low light, but will be slower growing.

Is your tank a FOWLER or do you have corals? If it is a FOWLER a black out could help get things under control over the short term. As stated above, finding the source of phosphates and nitrates are the long term solution. Is it a new tank? Is it fully cycled? This is the battle that we all have had with new tanks and most of us have won! Find the source, add a refugium if possible and be patient as well as persistant and you will win too.

k so here is a little run down of the tank. fairly new (about 4 months) 55 gal with roughly 70lbs of LR i have 5 little fishys and about 10 corals. a mix of lps, soft and a couple shrooms. i have an aqua c remora skimmer and a phosban phosphate reactor as far as filtration goes. right now running a 4 bulb 36 in t 5 unit, bought used so i have no idea how old the bulbs are. do weekly water changes 10 to %15 water volumn with rodi water. i feed frozen mysis bloodworms and another frozen marine cuisine. temp is always right around 78.

I am thinking that the flow in the tank is not really as good as it should be. so im thinking of doing a tank revamp which will consist of reworking the rock scape to allow corals to be placed better and adjust the flow in the tank. i will be buying new bulbs as of two weeks just for piece of mind.

can anyone recommend a good way to revamp a tank?

Its normal for a new tank to go through stages. You are at that algae stage. Cuc and or tang for green stuff. More flow for snotty stuff. And the brown stuff youll just have to bear with it for a little while. Wc and siphon what you can .
