So I got a tank off a buddy of mine a while ago, heres the question, do you think that smoking in the house (with the tank in one of the main rooms) would that maybe cause algea?? One reason i thought of this is because he didnt smoke in his house but i do. I didnt change anything (actually lost some fish from the move) other than upgraded the skimmer from a seaclone to a coralife 65 (29 gal. tank). One thing different is he was useing water from walmart from there AKA ro unit and im using an at home RO unit with new filters. Could the smoke/carbon dioxide progress and algea problem or am i just thinking way out of the box ?? Also only 1 fish and coral banded shrimp many snails and crabs.

If you used the same sand then there would be a nitrate spike etc.
I've heard that smoking around your tank is bad but never got a reason except that the nicotine will be absorbed in the water and thus poisoning fish and coral. This I don't really believe.
But, only when you brought up the topic of the smoke raising the CO2 levels, then this sounds possible but I'm not sure at all on this one.

    I don't think it will.

There's a few users on 3reef that are/were smokers and I've read posts from them indicating it's never been a problem for their tank

but, honestly, it's not the fish I'd be worried about poisoning...
