My hoevens wrasse is getting vertical notches on his upper back. Is this normal?

Do you have a photo you could share?

What do you mean by notches? If it's just "breaks" in the pattern, then yes, that's normal (like this: )

Looking for some info/help. I have two tangerine clowns, royal gramma, chalk bass and a jewel blennie. I would like to add some reef safe wrasse could you recommend a few that would go ok with each other. My tank is a Red Sea max 250. Thanks John

Excellent article! Gives me a little information on wrasses, since they're one of my favorite saltwater fish :) I love six-line wrasses. However, the non-reef-safe wrasses are really cool too :(

The tank size is somewhat limiting. It's also worth considering the clowns will become territorial of their claimed space once mature. The tank is suitable for most any Paracheilinus wrasse, but there are only a handful of Cirrhilbrus wrasses which are appropriate for a tank of this size. Those of the lubbocki complex meet the bill.

Thanks Fish Tan. Note sixlines, or all Pseudocheilinus, are typically quite aggressive once mature.

Neither of those are really suitable in a 65g and/or 3' tank.
