Hey evolved do you know much about the pencil wrasse? Looking at the profile for the royal pencil wrasse, Pseudojuloides severnsi , I dont see any mention of this genus on the thread.

In some ways, they were intentionally left off. A tricky genus in general with poor survival rates; exceptionally poor shippers. They require a sandbed and very, very peaceful tankmates. Should only be mixed with other very passive wrasses, and are prone to reverting to female if mixed with any more dominant wrasses. Also require frequent small feedings; the more the better.

Basically, take a Tamarin, and turn up the difficulty quite a bit.

Hmm well that explains why you dont hear to much on them. Why BlueZoo has it rated as intermediate is beyond me.

Another one to cross off the lsit, the flame wrasse is so much better looking anyway!

I need some advice. My LFS got a wrasse in that isn't something they would ever order, but was mismarked. It's a female Stethojulis Bandanensis and measures around 4". It's now at my house in QT until I either find it a huge tank to go in or I know more about it and potentially put it in my 180g tank.

I've read that one of the biggest issues with Stethojulis is that they tend to zoom around and bash themselves to death. So far this one is active but no frantic movements. It was in a tank with other fish at the LFS and it being caught then transitioned to my QT went very smoothly. It's also eating Mysis.

Is there anything I can do to give it a better chance at surviving?
Has anyone else kept one successfully?
Is it likely to eat coral? If it goes after snails, crabs, etc - that's not a big concern in my tank but I have quite a few high end corals that I would prefer not become a snack. If it's a coral snacker then it will definitely stay in QT until I can find another tank to put it in.

To be upfront, they never survive in captivity and it's one to avoid purchasing.

Yes, they can end up bashing into the tank, but the biggest issue keeping them in captivity is they need a CONSTANT supply of food. We simply can't feed them enough in the long run in a closed system. A very high metabolism. Think of a mandarin + an anthias on steroids.

Not a corallivore, but any small motile inverts will be on the menu.

Hunter, I love the knowledge that is presented on wrasses in this thread. I don't think I've seen any other species of SW fish so well documented. Sometimes it's a wee bit overwhelming when I say, "I want a wrasse, I'll go check evolved's thread". I seem to change my mind each and every time I look. :D

And this is just something that popped up when looking over the first post with the list. Would you think that your list could be transformed into an infographic? Or would it just be too much info? I guess I could see one being poster size (or bigger) to fit the hobbyist level of wrasses. I don't know, I thought I'd throw it out there and see what you think?
I was just browsing around when I found this and it's kinda what sparked the idea.

But otherwise, after I move into my 93cube (and make a screen top) I'm going to be back and ready to make decisions. (hopefully) o_O
