So what type of lid/top should I have?

The main purpose for having the glass lid is that I have my lighting fixture on it.

If I didnt have the lid, I'm afraid that a splash (rare occasion) would hit the actual bulbs.....?

I got rid of the bristleworm if thats what it was, used the net and threw his ass out!

2nd heater in 3-5 months too....

2nd glass lid in 2 weeks.....

They will get VERY hot, though, so if you get a titanium that gets exposed to air while it is on, do not touch it! (Speaking from 500W of titanium heater experience!)

the titanium heaters should never be exposed to air when heated, I just read all the safety stuff for mine and according to the manufacturer if you need to move it you unplug it for an hour, let it sit submerged and then handled due to the heat they carry, hell im starting to worry this thing may get to hot for my acrylic sump lol

Ok... so I was reading around on here today and found out that with my filter, you are supposed to clean/rinse out the sponge part every so often (weekly).... i havent done this since I bought it, about 5 months ago.

The guy I bought it from told me not to touch anything in the filter because it harbors the beneficial bacteria.

I'm gonna take a loook at my filter today and try to see whats going on in there.... from reading and going to the LFS, they said I need to clean up my filters. I looked at one of the HOB power filters they had there, and I dont know if mine has all the same "stuff" inside (Theres had 3 layers, sponge - something else - something else)

When you think of "beneficial bacteria", you often think of live rock, bio-balls, or some other type of wet-dry filter. Any sponge you have in the filter will collect organic material which will eventually break down and increase the ammonia/nitrate/nitrite levels. By cleaning them each week you can reduce the bio-load in the tank and have a direct impact on managing the nitrate cycle.

There are many lights which have a shield in the frame so that they can sit on the tank with reduced risk to splashing onto hot bulbs.

I use glass tops too. Never had any gas exchange problems. I did step on one half of my glass too. I just use the larger piece and leave the front open. Looks cool. what kind of lights and they should have a splash guard.
