if there was sea cucumbers that died in the other tank not only could there have been some residual toxins on the rock but there also could have been a full sea cucumber or sea apple or other toxic thing that likes to kill everything with it when it dies.

They're had to be something on that rock.. I've added a few rocks here and there since I started my 40, and haven't had any problems. I'm not sure copper makes sense either, unless there was just a MASSIVE amount of copper on the rock, which I doubt. I'd get on google and find out as much about the sea cucumber he had as possible..

I'm really sorry about your fish though, I had a few fish die a month or so ago. I know how you feel brother. Only thing you can do is pick yourself up, do it by the book, and try to move passed it..

copper leach wouldnt have killed fish, not with new water especially, cucumber toxins wouldnt have done it either. sounds like a mini cycle, too much stress etc..

Yup IMHO. The most logical conclusion.

    Cucumber toxins wouldn't do it???

    I disagree.

I have first hand experience with a cuke nuke. I used to have a 55 gallon reef tank (over 10 years ago)... I went to bed and all the fish were happy... woke up the next morning, and walked by my tank first thing in the morning and noticed that I couldn't see any fish swimming... then, one by one found them all dead in the sand... EVERY fish had died, and my tank's smell was horrendous. There was a cucumber stuck in a powerhead... it was an old maxi jet and the strainer had come off and the cuke was sucked up into the impeller....

I got sick and very dizzy when I was cleaning out the tank... I had to run copious amounts of carbon and purigen before the smell went away... I didn't get many fish after that, and it wasn't long before I shut the tank down entirely and threw just about everything out.

That tank became a cichlid tank and it was years until I went back to reefing again (my current tank). ;)

I'll never own a cuke again.

cuke toxins stuck in the rock work and later leach out and kill the tank far down the road though would be the story here i think if i am reading it right

The cucumbers died in a different tank, yes the one the rock came from but who knows when they died if they died at the same time and what types of cucumbers they were, not all cucumbers will nuke a tank. Add to that the slim chance that there was enough residual toxin in one piece of rock to kill all fish.

Same goes with the idea that residual copper was to blame, just not possible. The amount of copper needed to kill fish outright from copper leaching from one rock is just not plausible either.

The logical conclusion from the information provided in the first post is that there was some die off on that one piece of rock and it caused a decrease in water quality.

    Thanks guys!

Thanks guys for all your responses. The tank definately isn't cycling again. Let me tell you about the tank. It's a 75g built-in. We've had it up since August. Everything else in our tank lived. The snails, the crabs, all our corals. We tested and everything was good. We did a massive water change, I mean almost all of it, cleaned out filter, added new carbon, cleaned all powerheads, protein skimmer, the works. Here is the update. Tank is back to normal. The rock we put in the tank is actually quite beautiful and has a boat load of yellow polyps all over it, they are all open and doing well. All our other corals are doing great too. We got a few fish, cuz we hate not seeing stuff swimming around, got a clown and 2 firefish. I have no doubt it was that "cuke nuke" as someone called it. Screw those things.
Again, thanks everyone. Will send pics as soon as I get batteries for the camera. ;D
