So I was looking at the new super reef octopus xp-2000 on aquacave website Super Reef Octopus XP 2000 In-Sump Cone Protein Skimmer by CoralVue* - AquaCave, and at the bottom it says that all skimmers perform best in 8" to 10" of water. So if I have a 12" deep sump I should put the skimmer on a 2"stand? Or would I see much difference in performance? Also, this skimmer is rated for up to 200 gallon tanks, do you think this skimmer would be overkill on a 65 gallon tank (82 gallons total including sump)?

It's a sick looking skimmer, but feel free to recommend another one. I was also considering the ASM G1

You need to put it on a stand. It would not work at 12". 10" is supposed to be the out side for mine, but 10" is way too deep. My gate is open 100% and I still can't get a good level. I keep it at the recommended 8".

I also keep my euro reef rs 135 at 8 inches with the gate in the middle seems to work very well for me

    4" stand then. No problem.

What about that size skimmer on my tank? Too much?

Subjective question, but it is the one I would buy if it were me.

I think it would work well on your tank and leave you room to upgrade tanks in the future
