Well, almost had a flood this morning but caught it just in time. I was filling my RO/DI holding tank (35gal) last night and forgot and left it running all night. That worked out OK because now I have 32gal of RO (never had it this full before, usually only have 10gals in it). The problem is that my sump ran low, I guess early in the morning, the auto topoff pump started and because the holding tank was so full when the pump stopped the water kept going because of the siphoning action created. So my main tank was at it's limit, my sump was at it's limit and I had 32gals of RO still flowing into the sump and the main water supply still running. So I have a low water sensor in the sump to start the auto topoff. I have a main tank full sensor "But I don't have a dummy you left the water running sensor"!!

I put a kent float in my RO holding tank. So when it is full it shuts off the RO unit. You will also need a shut off kit with a solenoid for your RO unit.

Sounds like you caught it just in time. Any time I have a valve open from the RO/DI unit I turn the hall light on downstairs to remind me it is on and I don't go to bed forgetting.

Thats happen to me a bunch of times, the ro container flooding from me forgetting to shut the rodi off. What I am going to do is by a mechanical float valve and then have some backup redundancy with a float switch hooked up to a solenoid. You could also contact Tangster, I think he sell a kit.

I already have everything, I just need to do it.If the water reaches the float switch, the solenoid closes not letting water through.

Otty, I also do the light thing but went to bed before the wife and left it on.
I think the shutoff valve is the right thing for me.

Ya, easy for you to laugh.
The worst part is with all that fresh water my salinity is down and my temp dropped. Oh well the carpet is dry so the wife's happy!! Looks like everyone in the tank is OK also!!

When I used to fill up buckets, I would set the oven timer for an hour or so :D

I hope this isn't considered hijacking your thread, but I just ordered a ro/di system, but I'm not sure if I am going to use it now because I realized the amount of waste water.

I am now thinking about using fresh seawater that I can get for free from La Jolla Scripps Oceanography Pier. My questions are how long can I keep water in buckets or barrels before I use it? And is there a way to use an auto top off valve with my water in these buckets? I'm not sure how an auto top off valve works, but I've read some threads where reefers mention using this type of system.

Please let me know what you think is my better option of water and if possible show me a diagram of how an auto top off works.

BTW bulltrader, I'm glad you didn't have a flood.
