I purchase this Galaxea two days ago. At the LFS it was close to the surface which was lit by 400W MH. When I brought it home I positioned it about 12" from the top of my tank which as 250W MH thinking the light would be close. After a couple of days there are white spots forming, is this bleaching? I still haven't seen the polyps or sweeper tentacles extended. I'm afraid I have an unhealthy coral and if so I would rather have it improve but I don't want to kill it with light in the process.I hope someone with experience in this coral can help. Also, is it normal for the polyps to be contracted for this long?

That doesnt look like a Galaxea. looks more like a Cup Coral aka Pagoda. Luna

Funny you should mention that, I was told by the guy at the LFS that it was a Pagoda and when I went back to get it the owner was there and said it was a Galaxy. Thinking that's what it was I positioned it with lots of light and kept it away from other corals so the dreaded tentacles wouldn't harm other corals. I didn't see any sweepers (not even at the store) and no polyp extensions. If it is a Pagoda then it is a lower light coral, correct? anyone have a Pagoda who could give me some pointers?

I have one and its a little above half way under 250w MH. They also like a decent flow. Luna

Definitely a galaxea, here is one half dying so you can see the skeleton -

Yours appears to be in bad shape, I would move him down, did it looks like this at the LFS, all polyps out?

I moved it down to the bottom. I'll leave it there until it (hopefully) comes around. It looked exactly as it does now at the LFS minus the white spots. It's a shame really, the coral is about 6"x4" and I'm sure it would be impressive in a healthier condition. Oh well, all is not lost yet...wish me luck. I'll post an update as it progresses.

Ya the worst thing you can do IMO is blast an unhealthy coral with tons of light/flow. Hopefully it will recover, turn the lights off over the tank and shine a flashlight over it, if you see any neon tint there might be flesh left. how much did you pay for that piece?

All of the polyps are glowing bright green under the moon lights but not so much on the base skeleton. I hope the fleshy layer that is left will rebuild. I paid $75 for this piece but keep in mind I am in Canada, our dollar doesn't have quite the "bang for the buck" as yours.
