I got this SPS coral a few months ago unsure as to what it is. It grows well but only the tips seem to be purple, then as it grows it turns brown. Is this the nature of this coral? Or something I am doing wrong with water quality? Could I be doing something better? It is in a 90 gallon with a 6-bulb t5 fixture with individual reflectors.

    Any comments would be great!

Some SPS are just browner than others....

However, you won't get good color without proper lighting and very low nutrients.

So what does your lighting consist of and what do your phosphates & nitrates test out at?

Looks nice, some corals are browner than others. I would definitely consider nutrients and lighting as well. How do your other corals, that you've had for a while look?

    I have a 6-bulb t5 fixture with individual reflectors.

Nitrates test at 0. Do not test phosphates and i assume they are low, as i have no algae issues or blooms.

My other SPS corals seem to be doing well and growing well.

I have found that certain acros tend to brown out faster than anything else. But you are getting decent color on the tips. And I have read that wild acros tend to brown out the most. Depending on the lighting that coral was in when you got it, can also have an effect. It would be good if you could get a proper test on your phosphates though.

What other sps do you have in your system?

What bulbs do you have? Your corals look very healthy and have deep coloration. Likely you either have a bit of nitrate that just isn't getting detected, or you are running low par bulbs etc... The coral could be natural brown, or could be another color that just isn't illuminated by the spectrum of your lights.

I totally agree! your other acros look awesome, so I would lean towards a spectrum issue, or you just have a brown acro with purple tips.:p

Please list your bulbs, I am thinking spectrum also. There maybe nutrient issues also. Do you have glass lids on the tank? How high are the bulbs above the tank and what brand fixture?

They all look like they are growing well.. But just by looking at these pictures it looks like you have too much of the "daylight" spectrum.. As stated above, it would help to know your bulb combo.. In a six bulb I wouldn't have more then 2 day bulbs. i.e. aquablue special.IMO. Good luck with everything..;D
