This might sound like an odd question but, will music have a detrimental effect on the growth of a reef aquarium. I know that coral reefs are fragile and that they can be damaged in many ways but is audio waves in the water one of them???

I'm planning to setup my new aquarium in my home office which is also where I tend to listen to and jam to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin and Metallica...

What I'm worried about is on those nights where I crank the amp up to 15 and crank out an extended version of Free Bird will this hurt a coral reef more than it will say my fresh water tank. Which to say I'm not sure but I think my angels like Skynyrd (they swim to the front of the tank and I get that feeling like their watching me).

Does anyone know if excessively loud music (as per the fine I got from the city) can damage/hurt a reef aquarium?

I dunno for sure so don't quote me but I think it may. Depending how much vibration your speakers are putting out I don't see a difference in just taping on the glass a whole bunch of times. I mean think about it, SW fish have a very specialized sense of pressure the more intense pressure that you put on these organs the higher the possibility that they will become stressed. Once again don't quote me, just my .02.

I have listened to all 17 minutes of freebird, grateful dead, metallica and a mostly whole bunch of hardcore as loud as my stereo can go and my fish dont seem to mind.

Judging by the tattoos and mohawks i think they may actually enjoy it.

well music helps plants grow faster.

i think if it would bother any thing it would be the fish. i used to have a maroon clown that would seem to wiggle to the beat of the music

Ive always tried to keep my other entertainment on the quite side just for fear of stressing out the fish. Only thing I ever had to base it on though was the fact tapping on the glass scares them. Not the first clue what it would do to corals if anything.

I think it would be worth thinking about the difference between tapping on the glass and vibrations from speakers. When you tap on the glass, the sound/vibration comes from one point on your finger tapping one point on the glass. With speakers, I think the vibration would be more evenly distributed across the glass. Not sure how each scenario truly affects your tank, but I would be willing to bet that you would get different results from each.

Personally, I would think that as long as your tank isnt "Riding the Lighting" off your stand. you would be good to go! buh-dun-cha!

My tank has been set-up no farther than 15 feet from my guitar amp for as long as I have been reef keeping ;) Peavey 6505+ as well, so I don't know if you're going to find anything much louder ;)
