About a week ago, my small blue hippo disappeared... After a week not seeing him I assume he is dead :-[. I tested my water and I am getting a slight reading of ammonia. Everything appears to be doing fine. I have since done two 10 percent water changes. Will this take care of itself? The water changes did not have that great of an impact on the level. Will this eventually get converted to Nitrate via Live Rocks and such? Thanks for any advice.

So is it safe to assume by your story that the hippo has died in there and is rotting, causing the spike?

Well, how bad it will get and how long it will last will depend on a few different things. Exactly how big was the hippo? Do you have a good clean-up crew that will eat dead things, like hermits or maybe even nassarius snails?

Ah, i just saw the amt in the title.. sry bout that. Any amt of ammonia is bad, but I'm not sure at what point you would want to treat it vs. letting it ride. What livestock do you still have in the tank? Did you add anything new recently like live rock(other than the tank)

It was about 1.5 inches, if that. I have about 15 crabs and about 10 snails (they were called Turbo and mexican turbo in the store)

Nothing has been added recently. I have a Naso tang, 2 perculas, and a small emporer angel. They appear to be happy....eating etc... should I add some Prime? I just did not want to get into the whole making chemical soup thing....

If it was me, i would use the prime, but I would want to hear from a few more people before doing anything.
