This is intriguing assuming no photoshopping. I've been asked many times over the years to fix people's aquascaping. They know it doesn't look good but they don't know how to fix it. I typically find one of two things....a Wall O' Rock or rock that has been piled symmetrically. Well, the Wall O' Rock is just wrong for obvious reasons. However, I tell the people who try to make their rock symmetrical, "Nature doesn't make things symmetrically....that's why it doesn't look like a real reef". There's an awful lot of symmetry in those pics. Like I said, this is intriguing. I'm looking forward to follow up.

It's probably some strange igneous crystal formation that occured with a specific type of magma under unique circumstances. Or, it's the alien city from The Abyss....Or it's Jimmy Hoffa and Elvis's secret hideaway.

what happened to the good old days of discovery? adventure? risk? now apparently it is done in a room looking at google earth and funded by britney spears era journalism. :) what a crazy world....they should just email the directions to someone who can just drive over and check it out. :)

i was thinking it could be algae hedge rows, damsels do that and other herbivores. They will take up a spot and fight out anything that comes withing the territory. The edible algae on the outside of the perimeter, (next to the perimeter of the next fish), becomes a herbivore free "no mans land". anyone goes for it they fight. one of the littler books, i think it is their pocket field guide, talks about this. they are very geometric

I think they are selling it as new satellite imagery techniques. We shall see.

Great post John Maloney. The damsel hedges idea is interesting. I gave you a 'thumbs up!' :)
