I bought an anemone on Saturday and put him on the left side of my tank under one of my BoostLED Par30s where I thought he'd like it. Today I noticed he's moved to the right of my tank into a cave (almost). I'm on my cell phone so I can't edit the pictures and draw lines but hopefully you can see what I'm talking about.

I thought anemones need bright light? I'm getting a pair of clownfish tomorrow in the mail and was hoping he'd be happy there, but I guess he still wants to look around. Also, there's a big rock above him that I could move in the event he just likes the ravine and wouldn't mind more light.

    What do y'all think?

Im sure it is just exploring the tank and finding the perfect place.

I see this quite often. Fact is, not all nems are accustomed to bright light and may retreat into a shaded area for a short period. In most cases, they do "acclimate" themselves to their new environment, or at least find a more comfortable place. The best thing you can do is just leave it alone, now. It should start moving closer to the light in a few days or less.

Ok, thanks guys, I actually saw there were multiple threads almost identical to this so I'm not worried. Another thing is I think my water flow is too high, his initial spot I had to brace him with a few seashells :D

I have a koralia 750 and i think it's a bit much for a 40g, so i'll keep my eyes peeled on CL for some 420s.

I also saw a video on youtube about sticking new clownfish in a confined area with the anemone to 'make' them choose it as a host. I've read about people here having clownfish host things like their filters and pumps, and I'd obviously like to steer away from that as much as I can. But it seems time and patience will pay off. I think this hobby should be called saltwater aquariums/the patience hobby.

While your flow is not really that strong, it's a lot better if you used at least 2 pumps placed on opposite ends of the tank. 4 would be premium.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
    This is very true.

Not all anemones require intense lighting, add to that if this anemone was just shipped, or in a tank with old bulbs or less intense lighting it's going to take some time for it to acclimate.

    Is this a BTA?

To be honest, I'm not sure. I don't think so, but I think I've seen pictures of BTA with their tips deflated. And since it's from a local fish store who I wouldn't trust to accurately label it.

In a 40 gallon? It does seem to be taking a while for my water to get as clear as I'd like it and I suspect certain areas just don't ever get a chance to make it to the overflow, so maybe I'll look into replacing the 750 with a few smaller ones (and of course I have the return water shooting through a nozzle.

Yes. I have 870gph flow from 4 pumps in my 29g; at 30x total turnover, that's only suitable for most soft corals and some LPS. For SPS you'd need at least 50x. You only have 18.75x in your 40 from the one pump; of course you need to add the flow from your return.

Oh wow, thanks for the tip. I have another 750 but I think 4 of the smaller ones might be better. I'll probably stop by PetCo later on.
