I bought a pair of clownfish and a BTA on the weekend. They weren't hosting the BTA as they were kept in separate tanks at the lfs. I bought them in the hope that they would host the anemone.
I placed the anemone into the tank first and about 20 minutes later I added the two clownfish. It took about 1.5 nanoseconds for the clowns to dive into the anemone and roll about delightedly. Since then the anemone has (as expected) moved around to hide until he feels safe enough to emerge. However I got home today and the two clownfish have left the anemone and are swimming around the tank.
Has the anemone rejected the clowns? Does this mean that they are unlikely to return to it when it finds its "special place" in the tank?

firstly its the nem that hosts the clowns and not the other way around. secondly i went 6 months before my true percula recognized my btas, so give them time. if yours went straight for it in the first few seconds then there is huge chance they will do this again.

do not forget that clowns arent born "immune" to nems. they build the protective mucus as they go along. my guess is they are producing said mucus as we speak in small doses. give them time and soon enough you will see them being hostED by your nem.

on a side note what clowns to do you have?

Ocellaris. I bought these because I am new to the hobby and was told that these are the most robust/newbie proof.
I didn't know that the anemone hosted, thought it was the other way around, but makes sense now I think about it!!
I also didn't know that they need to become immune, I thought it occurred naturally from birth.
Thanks for responding, I feel much more at ease.

right? you would be surprised how many people say it the other way around....

glad to help, during the 6 months where i was waiting for my nem to house my clowns i tried different tactics, including the "picture on the tank" method where you place a picture of two clown in a nem. now i did this using the wrong scale and literally posted a HUGE clown in an equally huge nem.....almost gave my flame angel a heart attack when it saw the picture....was kinda funny, he was swimming around minding his own business then when he spotted the picture he jolted back behind a rock a slowly popped it head out looking at the picture from a distance.....i swear it was like a cartoon.

but yea i quickly removed the picture and just let time do its thing. iv read there there is never any guarantee that clowns will find housing in nems but iv been lucky so far...heck my clowns even enjoy my condy nem.

I actually had an ocellaris that dove right into a rbta and got stung. She would never go near another nem as long as she lived. In the same tank, I watched my domino damsel build his immunity to a condy nem where he stayed the rest of his life.
