I have been out of power since Friday at about 9pm. I'm running a 75g display with a ~20g sump. Reef tank with 2 clowns a cardinal fish and kole tang.

Temp has been holding between 70.5 and 73.2 thanks to a NG fireplace. I was able to run an extension cord to my wife's van and with the 150 watts I'm able to run the return pump 1 power head and a 25w mini heater I use for mixing salt. Obviously I can't leave the van running all day and night but it ran for about 5 hrs yesterday.

What else could I be doing to mitigate loss???

The power company says power should be back tonight at 11p but I am not too confident.

Thanks in advance and sorry for not searching previous threads but I have limited battery life on my phone!

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I siphon out a gallon of water and poor it back into the tank at an elevated height to oxygenate the water every hour or so. Sounds like you have the temp covered, but if you have a gas water heater you can also fill gallon jugs with tank water and let them sit in a sink of warm/hot water to bring the temp back up.

Good luck to you and the tank.

Oh and I've been "turkey basting" water into the tank often. Producing a bit of flow and bubbles. Don't know if that helps but makes me feel like I'm doing something.

    Sorry for your troubles.

Sounds like you're doing what you can, and Corrailine's advice as well.

When I lived in Tx, I was suprised that my hot water heater worked w/o the electicity. Even though i'ts Gas, I thought it needed the elec. for the controller? It did make hot water however.

Good luck, hopefully it will be back soon, with no losses

putting air bubbles into the water with the turkey baster wouldn't be harmful so you are doing something. Follow Corailline's advice about the water movement/aeration and in keeping your water warm.....it sounds like you have a great chance of everything being ok.....good luck!!

Thanks for the help. Power was restored just a bit ago. Temp is 69.9. Should I just let the heater do its thing or let it run, then unplug for a bit, then let it run etc ??? So that it's a more gradual temp increase???

Personally I would just let it do it's thing, just like acclimating fish and corals to a new tank.

It will take awhile hours and hours for the temp to get back to it's desired value.

Congrats on getting the power restored, that should make you sleep better.

Tough situation. Good luck. I think if you have a large investment in your tank, then the smallish investment in a small generator is a must. If you live in NE Mass we get bad storms and lose power often, so we have a huge gen that will power most everything in the house. I know they make small ones that will power an entire tank setup for short money. Of course if you are in an apartment then it might not be an option.

    Good luck bro.
