    Hello all,

Here's a horrible pic of my overflow stand pipe. I think it gives you the general idea though.

The pipe is making a lot of gurgling noises, and I'd like to get my overflow as quiet as possible.

My question is, would a durso style standpipe be an improvement over what I have now in terms of noise reduction? Is the placement of the air hole on the durso an improvement over where it is on mine right now?

I have a 110 gallon with corner overflow. I have a 30 gallon sump, and my return pump is a Quietone 4000. I don't use any sort of valve on my return line. The noise isn't horrible, but it is loud enough to disrupt the sound on my home theatre when I'm watching a movie. I'd like to get my tank as quiet as possible.

    Cheers.

The anti-siphon hole should be on the return line. Other than that I have no idea. I have read that dursos are quieter.

My standpipe came with the anti siphon holes, it's not my own design. Do you think that they could be causing an issue?

Only if they allow the water to squirt out above the water line I would think.

I haven't noticed them being an issue. If the water level gets that low, they are loud, but the water usually stays a good inch above that mark.

I don't want to install a sponge in it, because I work shifts and could be prone to forgetting to clean it frequently.

From what little i have gathered with the durso style, larger pipe is going to make it a quieter operation since the water falling down the pipe will cling to the walls. I have heard of another member drilling the tops of his with a 1/4" hole, but he runs a lot of water volume through his durso pipes. So 1/4" might be too large. Might drill out the top a little larger than what it is now maybe?.?...

Thanks. I currently have nothing restricting my flow, so maybe a bigger hole will help.

I was curious because the durso only differs from mine in seemingly minor ways. There is an extra bit of vertical pipe above the "u" pipe, and the hole is on top of that pipe. However, I guess little differences in design can make a difference.

My durso had a small hole on top very small nipple sticking up with very small hole.Lock line helped quiet it too.

It looks like that hole is close enough to the surface to possibly create a small vortex and suck in air in causing noise in the line.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've tried covering them and it didn't make a difference.

I think part of the noise is coming from bubbles coming back up from the sump.
