Looking at a Hamiltom 175W Metal Halide with PC for a 16'' deep 30 gal to keep sps, clam, maybe anemone among others.

Even though watts per gallon is lame depending on the power compact option it will be around 9.5 or 12 wpg.

Mostly I am concerned about the tank being to shallow. Marine and Reef says that you can consider MH at 16 inches or deper and I could raise the fixture above the tank if I have to.

    Overkill or not?

You definately want to raise your lighting up. Water Splash + MH lamp = Bulb Explosion

If you feel that this will be too much lighting for you, you can go with a Hamilton 14k. The par drops substantially as you go up in Kelvin.

    Should be fine....

I run a 150 HQI about 3-4" above my 24g nano cube, my M. cap. is loving it! If you have a lid youll need to raise it due to heat.
