ive been doing some research and ive found that many people cant keep their chromis alive...:confused:

the fact that some people have this problem and apparently no one that has the problem knows the reason why... is worrying me a little...:-/

what do you guys think thats the case for so many people? and what can i do to prevent it?

I think it's in part to the fact that they are extremely passive fish. When I first added cromis to my tank, my clown rounded them up and fed them to the anemone. They really don't have much defense from predation.

I would be willing to bet anything its how they are collected and handled before they get to the consumer. I have had the same 5 in my tank now for 6 months with no problems.

the problem with green chromis is that they are a deep water fish. When collecting deep water fish they have to be brought up gradually to prevent "the bends". A good fish collection will bring them up a little at the time....allow them to get used to the pressure then bring them up higher...so forth until they can come all the way up.

However what happens most of the time with this fish in particular is that they just bring them right up and pierce their swim bladder to prevent the bends.

I have been working at a fish store for about 5 weeks or so, and have seen that about half the chromis die when they arrive.

ask them at the store how long they have been at the store. If they have been there for a week or so and eating then they should be fine

yikes, my firefish is a deep water fish. hopefully nothing bad happens to him/her because of the way it was caught in the ocean, assuming it was the same as the chromis

    I'm getting pretty worried....

I always ask my LFS to hold onto any new fish I am interested in for at least a week. It's tough at first laying down cash on fish and going home empty handed but it sure beats the alternative.

yeah, I won't buy a fish unless it's been at the LFS for at least a week, acts healthy, eats well, etc.

Just take good care of your new ones - I'm sure they'll be fine!
