I am having a terrible time with small little ants coming into the house this summer. I live in Central VA and we have had some really, really warm weather. I am worried about calling an exterminator. Can y'all recommend or set my mind at ease about exterminators? I have a 2 story house and the ants are coming into the mudroom, kitchen, living room and I have even seen some upstairs.

I have 3 tanks...the 150 reef in the living room, a 265 FOWLR (in progress) and a 30 in the bedroom.

Get some "ant house" type things. They have poisoned food in them, and they kill the colony in a week or two.

I've seen this product that works very well. This was recognized even by the exterminator that my apartment complex sent when I complained about the ants.
The product is called "Terro Ant Killer" and it is a clear gel-like liquid you put into pieces of cardboard that you cut out of the same box the product comes in. Ants eat this ant take it to the colony, and this way they spread the poison, exterminating the mother colony.

I would look into that. My ants were gone within a week, but I'm not positive if it was because of the "Terro Ant Killer" or whatever the exterminator sprayed. Fortunately the ants' way in was in the bathroom windows seal, so I was not scared about him spraying there.

    Good luck!

If you don't cover the tank the poison they spray or bug bomb will kill everything. Especially if you run a skimmer it will suck in air poisoning the water. assuming you use something that goes in the air.

Yeah, that is my biggest concern...we don't even spray air freshener around the rooms.

We have set some ant traps around the kitchen, but that doesn't seem to stop them from coming into the rest of the house

I will look into this. Thanks. I just do not want to do anything to jeopardize my tank.

How is the ant issue progressing? It's starting to get colder now, so they should really slow down. Did you use the terro-ant?

Do you know where they are coming in? I had an ant problem in a basement apartment and I sprayed lysol where they were coming in and along the trail where they were walking and wiped up the ants inside. None came back. I'm guessing it was partly because ants leave scent trails for others to follow and I erased the trail.
