I have the flow set for the least amount of noise from my overflow so for me, adjusting is not an option. As for my skimmer, it used to be hanging on back if my tank with the pre filter attachment even up there it slowed down. Once I setup the new sump and piping and started it all up it pulled all kinds of stuff for the next 3 days.. Then pretty much went back to just sitting there.. Sooooooooo.. My guess is that it works as long as there is enough in the water for it to pull out, which makes perfect sense to me.. Right? I am running the recommended maxi-jet 1200 on it though and maybe stepping up to a mag 3 would give it better performance ? I have read conflicting threads as to whether a skimmer stops producing when there's not enough for it to skim and whether or not that's normal.

My tank right now is about 30 gallons with 10 gallon sump and is 3 years old.

Have leathers, polyps, sponges, xenias, hammer, birdsnest...etc... Assorted clean up crew and coral banded shrimp. Fish wise however, I have 2. One is 2 inches an the other is maybe .75" so I would consider that a pretty low bio-load. And possibly why there is nothing to skim.
