    My two cents says it's the coil in the compressor clutch, not too tough a fix. :)

    Most compressors, NO! Don't even have to discharge the system. Just remove the pulley and the electro-magnetic clutch behind it. You can also pull the wire off the clutch (if you can get to it) and check the reading to ground with an ohm meter. If it's less than 5 ohms it's shot. :|
