Can i use my HOB filters as some sort of refuge? If i put some macro algae and crushed liverock in there, would that be better than filter media? would i have to keep at least one media tray in there? Any cool ideas at what i can do with these filters? Im sure the experts at 3reef have some sort of cool idea/DIY that i can do with these. Any response would be appreciated. (they are marineland Bio-Wheel 150 HOB filters)
    Thanks,
    RYan

I have seen a guy in my club use one of the old Tetra Tec filters as a small DIY HOB 'fuge... Wasn't the prettiest thing or for that matter the most effective thing but it accomplished what he wanted it too. It was a breeding site for copepods and amphipods and it provided some nutrient export, not much but some.

What would you do for a light for the macroalgae?

    Good luck!

Depending what you are trying to accomplish. If you just want an area to culture zooplankton and the like it will work, if you are looking for nutrient export, it will not be that effective unless you have a decent amount of macro algae.

ok i will show you my ideas on what i have narrowed it down to. Either keep the filters the same and only but in one filter pad for each and wherever i can, but crushed liverock. The filter goes fairly deep and there are a lot of shelves elsewhere in the filter where water flows.

Or, i will put 2 pads in one of the filters and in the other one, create a "refuge" with no pad but with liverock all in it.

Which idea sounds better? Im leaning towards the 1st one but im not sure... I want your opinion!
