    I was thinking sponge, but now it appears to be killing the base of a coral, and it spreads quite rapidly.

    Yeah you can siphon it off, but that won't eliminate the source of the problem (excess phosphates and/or nitrates). If there are excess nutrients in your tank, it will just come back, not to mention other types of algae that are much more difficult (if not impossible) to remove manually.
