Just looking for any info about the situation with our hobby there (LFS's if any, ordering, etc). May be moving there.

Yeah yeah yeah. I've done some searching and there seems to maybe be a club of sorts, and see some scheduled frag swaps. But I would like to actually be able to discuss the hobby and how it goes up there with someone. I'd be worried about getting stuck without a decent LFS and not being able to order stuff at the same time.
And on that note, I now really realize I have a reefkeeping problem when it is one of the major things to consider in a move ;)

I've been here since 1992 and can say the LFS's here are not very salt friendly (PetZoo, Petco), however, one called Coral Maniacs in Anchorage that is very nice for salt folks and will bend over backwards to get your biz.

In the great words of Homer Simpson, "We have a great life here in Alaska, and we're never going back to America again! ..."

Seriously, though--I can't see it being cost effective for LFS' to have salt water livestock, but it's not impossible. Shipping there would be steep, but if you love the hobby, and know what you're doing well enough to keep corals alive and thriving for a long time (I'm not quite there yet), then you can slowly build a tank and over the years it's doable.

I'd love to live in a state as beautiful as Alaska. Even better if you hunt and fish. You gonna be crab fishing off Dutch Harbor? :) Good luck if you make the move.
