As some of you know, I am starting to battle GHA. Like everyone always says, my P04 test shows zero-I just added 2 Phosban reactors--One with Phosban, and 1 with Kent Reef Carbon. I was wondering, I feed my tangs Romaine and Broccoli-Is it possible that they could be preserved with Phosphates??? I also put a few drops of Howards Pure Garlic Juice on the Lettuce (Box says all that is in it is Garlic Juice and Salt) Just wanted to know if any produce guys knew the answer!!;D

Thats a good Q, I dont know. But I can tell you that I was getting some GHA on my spray bars and I went to the LFS and bought 15 snails and in 3 days its clean as a whistle. What kind of a clean up crew do you have? No3 can also cause GHA.

i work in the food industy in Canada and I know here washed fresh vegetabales dont need a label. Phosphates aren't used as a presevative in industry. Even if they were the % wouldnt be high enough to contaminate your 150g. IMO

I have a pretty good clean up crew--I added 5 large Turbos and watched one of them clean some off the first day--then they all retreated inside the reef and only come out at night. They have not really done too much. I test weekly and all zeros on the big 3. I am careful on feeding. I will have to wait awhile on the reactors to see if they help. As far as feeding goes, I feed 3 1/3 cubes (PE mysis, Sallys Brine, and Emerald entree once daily) I tried backing off to once every 2 days but my tangs got real skinny. They eat all the food in 30 seconds. Not sure where to turn next.

Thank you for your input--makes me feel a little better. I tried to research this issue but really did not get a definite answer. I found that they do use phosphates as fertilizer though. They seem to be trying to find out how much uptake into the plant there actually is.

I believe phosphates are used plentifully in the food industry.

But I agree, it wouldn’t be sufficient to wreck havoc on your tank. I can’t keep up with the posts here, but it sounds like you have a challenge going on. Can you point me to a thread so that I can read up on your hair issue and what you have done to date? Glad to toss in two cents in where I can :)

Just my two cents.........My CUC works around the clock they never hide. With that being said one of the only differences between my tank is that i have a weak PC and the light is not that bright. Im thinking that if you turn down some of the light the CUC will be more active during the day. When your GHA is gone you can go back to full light.

Well I have backed up the lighting to 8hrs instead of 10hrs-I have replaced all of my t-5 bulbs (that was expensive) I have always used ro/di. I have always fed the same way.(7 mo. now) Really have not changed anything that I can think of. I thought maybe it was time to look at the pumps being they were at 6mo without a cleaning. Took them apart and cleaned. They were not that bad at all--Chaeto growth is good in the fuge--has not really changed. Changed the bulb in the fuge. Kinda out of options. The HA is not spreading that fast.Mainly on the oldest lowest rocks. I am very patient and dont really mind "Riding it out" as long as it doesn't completely take over.

First of all, I wouldn't feed my tangs such food when there is much much better food available and at an economical cost.
Marine fish digestive systems don't handle land based foods well enough to get the full nourishment from it. Unfortunately I can't find the report that originally I found on RC some years ago when "THE EXPERTS" still had their forums there. I believe it was on the Dr Shimek forum.
Specifically, I feed my tangs nori from the asian food market, and spirulina flake food.
Just make sure the nori is not seasoned.

As an experiment, try switching to "Certified organic"... see if there is any difference... (not saying there will be, just curious)
