Won't matter as all foods have phosphates naturally occurring in them, even if it hasn't been added as a preservative.

    Why wouldn't it matter?

Product A has x phosphates naturally.
Product B has x phosphates naturally + y phosphates added artificially (preservative).

One has more than the other. I think it very well could make a difference.

The products he is using don't have preservatives added unless they are processed as in canned or frozen.
If you buy fresh it doesn't matter if it is grown organically or not.

I have always heard it isn't good to feed lettuce ect. Specifically because the fish cannot digest them enough to get all the nutrients out of the food.

I have heard mixed reviews on all of this too---however I know my tangs tear it up and are healthy and happy. They have beaten ich twice so I know that their immune systems are healthy. Until I see adverse results I will keep doing the same thing i have been doing--works for me so far!!!

This is getting a bit off topic, I think. But this isn't true. The sprays used on the produce, after its been harvested, are different (supposedly) between the organics and 'regular'.

That aside, canned is one thing, but between fresh and frozen, fresh is more likely to have more chemicals on it than frozen as frozen tends to go from ground -> freezer so the sprays are not used in a lot of cases. (I don't know the particulars on a veggie by veggie basis, but in general this is true (when I was researching this, my focus was on apples - FYI)).

I've read reports (it's been a few years) about the sprays some grocery stores use in their store, in front of everyone, to contain color enhancing additives (phosphate source) - not just water. I don't remember which store was named in the study, so I don't want to go off bad mouthing any one in particular. But the point is the frozen stuff in this same store would have been protected from this.

I am not saying I actually have any hard data on phosphate concentrations in these sprays - but different is different. Between organic and regular and between fresh and frozen. Not to mention between fresh regular and frozen organic.

I suppose one could argue that a good washing negates this... but I doubt it really does. I mean, who really scrubs their veggies with soap and water?

EDIT: I just noticed (and I have no idea if makes any difference) the country difference between us RayJay. Probably not a meaningful difference, but my research on it was strictly a US produce study.

As have I heard different things on this matter. I just wanted to throw it out there to make you aware that it could possibly be harmful. I know it's said that it makes their life span shorter. Other than that, I don' t think it has any other bad effects. I had a friend who fed romaine lettuce religiously, and his tangs didn't live as long as they should have. This could have been from other reasons, but it also could be from the lettuce. I don't mean to tell you what to do, again, just wanted to make you aware of the possibilities.

I was thinking that it might be in the plant, if it was fertilized, whereas washing would have no effect. I also would agree that it would be more likely sprayed on fresh not frozen to extend shelf life and color. JMO

Thanks Karen!! I did not take it that way--in fact I appreciate your input! That is how I have learned as much as I have. I have left Nori in there for days at a time and they will not touch it. I just got them to start eating broccoli. This is my first reef tank, so I guess I will have to see what happens--Thanks again--Keep posting!!!
