I spoke to my LBS last week about maybe getting a tune-up. Just the basic stuff, and replacing the break cables as well. The right shifter gets stuck when I go to move it to the second gear. I think some cleaning and cable replacement is in order.

These bikes were hand built and are no longer made in the US. That's the main reason it's so difficult to find parts. And when you find parts for it on ebay sellers definitely advantage of this.

I am going back this weekend to get parts for my gf's bike, I will ask about ordering parts for mine while I'm there.

I wiped the bike down with a wet washcloth and water and got the frame and bracket pretty clean. I'm at school, so I haven't tried taking the wheels off yet. I may just do this on my own and only get the shifter and brake cables fixed at the shop.

The downtube shifters took some getting used to. I have a Gary Fisher Tiburon at home, but I appreciate the simple and lightweight design of classic roadies such as this one. Your posture on the bike is better too when it comes to long distance riding.

dont ride tour bikes, only some hardcore mountain biking over here. and there are some fantastic places around me. i also take my haro dirt jumper out occasionally to the dirt track, its not suitable for any real mountain biking though thats what my cannondale is for.

When I quit bike racing (cycling), everyone was still using downtube shifters!

Guess that actually make me pretty old, huh?

Sounds good Sean. I'd look into getting a little degreaser from the shop and running over the gearing and everything. I've used rubbing alcohol as well.

I'd also look into some new bartape, it can change how a bike feels for 5 dollars

I found these, they might fit the 600

    What he said. :)

I already got new bar tape for it. You can see the comparison of the old and new tape in my first image I posted. This stuff is really nice.

Bontrager Double Gel Cork Handlebar Tape - Black

The original suicide brakes for the DX-2000 attached to a bolt on the inner side of the main brake levers. They weren't separately attached to the handlebars as we see with cross levers.

But thanks for the links. I will have to check those out.

I'm probably going to get those Dia-Compe break hoods this weekend. I can't find anything closer.

I got a flat tire on Thursday evening after having ridden around town all day. I had just gotten back to campus and it was freezing rain outside. Luckily I already had a new inner tube and was able to fix it today.

The break hoods came in today as well. I'll put them and the wheel back on the bike on Tuesday. I washed the bike down this weekend; it looks pretty good.

Also for reference, here's a photo from the Panasonic catalog in 1982.

haha. Unfortunately I haven't gotten the time to put them on yet. I don't have a wrench on hand in the dorm to unscrew the brake cables (this is necessary to do since I have non-aero brakes) and the line goes through a hole in the brake hood. I will try it out this weekend.
