I have a 90 gal with 140# lr and 80# of live sand. Just trying to get some opinions on some tangs. I like a blue hippo as well as a salfin. I also like the simple yellow tang. I have a yellow fin fairy wrasse and a spotted goby in my tank now. I would like to have 2 tangs what do you think will work well together? Can I even have 2? Can I have to of the same tang? Thanks on any ideas!

two of the same is a bad idea as is 2 of the same body style.

as for multiples in the same tank i have 3 in my 72 with no issues. 1 hippo, 1 yellow, and 1 blonde naso.

two should be fine. I wouldn't go with the blue hippo or sailfin. Both of them get to be very big. I have a juv sailfin in my 98 gal. It makes me sad knowing I will have to find a new home for him when he grows up.

The blue hippo is a great fish but after about 3 years he will become kind of large for that tank if fed properly. They seem to have a little bit of personality compared to many of the other tangs. Mine hides in the rocks but if you look for him you can almost always see his eye looking out of a space in the rocks to see what I am doing. He is about 4-5inches long now and is steadily growing.
By the way their growth is not a problem it is the perfect excuse to get a bigger tank!!!!!!

Tomini tangs are a good nomination for a smaller tang, its a huge plus that they pick at the rocks ALL DAY. Another good one would be a kole tang. Both good options for you. Yellow tang will also be fine. I would keep away from the hippo and sailfin they get too large.

What about the powder tangs? You can keep two, as long as they are of different body types. A hippo would eventually get too big, but that would take years (probably much longer than 3). So if it's something you want to keep permanently, you will want to look at the smaller varieties.

I currently have a 4 inch Hippo, 2 inch Yellow and a 2 inch Kole tang which is my favorite.

Hippos are actully one of the smaller tangs, I don't ever think I have see one bigger that 7 or 8 inches long where I have seen Naso's and sailfins 12 to 15 inches long.

I love the look of several Yellow tangs in a tank, and they are on of the few that you can keep more than one ina tank, the best way to introduce them though is at the same time.

Tangs are tricky fish. Get babies as small as you can find. They are less apt to hurt each other than when they get bigger. I've had yellow, purple, naso, hippo and powder blue. I have a hippo tang now that I bought a couple of months ago and he was no more than an inch long. He is the best! He's grown to almost 1.5" and filling out nicely. You should consider either a cleaner shrimp which I recommend as they live long or a cleaner wrasse to fight the ich that tangs inveriably get. My cleaner shrimps keep all my fish healthy. Cha Ching! Getting back to tangs.. Purple tangs are hardy but bullies. Yellow tangs are somewhat mellower and can be kept in schools of 3 or more in odd number increments. The naso is a vegetarian and can sometimes die of malnutrition. See if he eats prepared food in the store. The powder blue is a gorgeous fish but seriously always gets the ich. One thing to consider with tangs is the big ones trash the tank after eating which causes nitrate problems and ich. They are swimmers and like a big tank. There is always a guy with a 300 gal tank that will take a healthy tang and give it a nice home. It's not the worst that can happen. It's not like the ASPCA. Good luck!:)
Below is a recent picture of the hippo tang ( this is my 65 gal tank, I'm getting a 120 gal in a week )
