LED Lights « Welcome to Captive Reef Eco Systems

i'm not much of a lighting buff (par, lumens, watts who knows?), but i know the guy who is pushing this system and i was looking for some 2nd opinions.

if i do choose to implement this sort of thing, i would still have my doubts of its ability to sustain a reef. if i could, i would try to run it on a FOWLR so that i can avoid heat, burnout, spectrum shift and the like. thoughts?

    Hi ZJPeter

    my opinion

there is some debate as to the capability of LEDS as a source of reef lighting
but Im looking to try it out on my nano in the near future , with Zoas and softies in

with a FOWLR , where the lighting is purely about viewing (OK fish also need a day/ night cycle) then I dont think you would have any issues

until there are more of these things in circulation, its difficult to asses their true capabilities IMO

WOOT! a reply! as far as reefs go i think i'm a converted T5 guy. the cost of running MHs and then the heat issues almost forcing me to run a chiller which would suck MORE energy.... this guy seems pretty sure that this is the way of the future. the idea of not having to change bulbs for almost a decade, low heat, low energy -- it's almost too good to be true! we just have to wait it out and see if LEDs really are the second coming ("waaaaaiiitin' is the hardest part...").

as far as FOWLR, how closely can a guy control the spectrum of and LED? do they shift and grow algae like other lights?
