I'm just wondering if this is workable. I don't even know if the area I live has good sand, but I have a feeling that the beaches on this island all have imported sand.

I'd imagine the sand where you are to be very pretty and white and clean (which is important). I may be wrong tho. I personally wouldnt do it cos i live in the uk.

You might be alright being in Indonesia, but i don't know. are you gonna get it from a public beach where everyone swims? I wouldn't recommend that. I know around here they close the beaches every once in a while due to fecal matter build up. I'm sure the florida tourism board didn't want me to leak that info.

Unfortunately the sand where I live is not pretty and white and clean. My island is just 10 miles south of Singapore in the Malacca straits. It is mostly an industrial island and the local population probably does dump most of its waste into the sea.

I'm tending to think that this may not be the way to go unless I can get some from one of the islands farther south and on the Indian Ocean side of Sumatra and Java. I hear the sand there is much nicer.

The only difference between live sand from the store and sand from the beach is that the store's won't have any pollutants in it. But the bag at my lfs litterally said "from the ocean to you", but I live five minutes from the beach so I decided to get my own and save myself 50+ dollars. I live near a private beach where theres no boat traffic, so it works. Just use common sense. If you're finding bandaids and seeing oil grease on the beach, go for the store brand.
