I managed to spill some water on a plug yesterday while doing a water change. Sure enough the whole house went out!

Anyways, the plug I spilt onto was for the lights and fans for my tank. The lights are fine, but the fans spin faster and faster and faster until I switch them off! Anybody know what the problem might be?

sounds like a resistor or something on the fan circuit is no longer resisting?

are than fans and lights on the same circuit? and do the fans start at normal pace and gradually increase in speed?

Yeah they are both on the same circuit. And yes the fans gradually increase, making a very loud noise!

    Thanks for the help!

how gradual of an increase are we talking till it reaches max speed? and are the lights and fans hooked up into some sort of box like this?
(the box parallel the the LED farthest to the left)

To be honest, I couldnt tell you. Its all hidden in the lid. (Nanocube)

Its starts off normal for a few seconds, the speeds up for about 5-10 seconds and makes a racket!

sounds like you blew the capacitor... You can easily fix it by running the fans straight to a 12Vdc adaptor. Then plug the Dc adaptor and the daylight lamp into the same timer for the easiest fix.

Ok. Is the capacitor in the fan? So I could fix it by replacing the fan? no?

no the fan is plugged into a circuit board under the splash guard where the capacitor is located after a wheatstone bridge rectifier circuit (which converts AC power to DC) which is prob being fed power off the AC input in parallel with the daylight bulb. (i am not 100% that nanocubes are wired like this but id be willing to bet i am close enough) So the fan is fine you just need to go to radio shack and get a 12Vdc power supply to get it working again. All you would need to do is cut the quick connect that plugs into the circuit board off... strip the wire back a bit...then cut the connector off the powersupply and strip the wires back a bit...then use wire nuts to connect the DC power supply to the fan and viola!
