This up coming summer I am moving away to continue school in northern Utah. I will most likely be in a dorm this summer and possibly next fall if I can't find an apartment near by campus. I was just curious if anyone has a reef tank that is in school. I am really wanting to upgrade to something a bit bigger than my 30 right now, but I am a little hesitant since I could be moving around a few times within the next year or so.

I would def, stay within the nano range. I am a sophomore at UWA In Alabama. I live on campus in the dorms and were only allowed to have it under 20 gallons. I have a 2.5 mantis tank, a 5.5 pico reef, a 10 gallon Reef/new mantis home build starting, and my brother has a 20 tall that is a semi reef. I have had to move the 20 twice i was thanking god that it wasnt bigger. If you donot end up liking your roomate your the one who has to move. So my bet would be the nano tanks. LOL.... good luck in your senior year!

Definitely don't go bigger. As mentioned, most schools have restrictions on what you can keep in your dorm and some school completely outlaw all pets including fish. Plus, it's PITA to move around. I would almost wait until you're done school to start another tank up, save what equipment you have and plan and save for that upgrade.

I'm a student at what was formerly UMR in MO. I started out with a 10gal brackish while I was in the dorms and then upgraded to a full saltwater FOWLR my sophmore year. Both years I was in the dorms and we were limited to 10gal. The 10gal alone was a PITA to move. I moved off campus for my junior year this year and upgraded to a 29gal Biocube. I plan on staying in this house for the rest of my schooling and am looking for a job here on campus for the summer so I don't have to move the tank. Needless to say, having a reef tank while in college can be quite a challenge with all the moves. I wouldn't go any bigger, 30 gal is already big enough.

I am a student at BSU and I currently have a 120 G mixed reef. Given I do not live on campus, I have a house a few blocks away, but it is pretty awesome. Whenever we throw partys or have people over everyone is blown away by the "Finding Nemo" movie in my living room.

I am on my second year of having a reef tank at school..I couldn't imagine not having it..no possibility of messing around with stuff in a garage or anything..so it's good to have something to work on in your apartment/dorm IMO..when you're done with school work that is! ha..

I think it would be really great to have a tank at school, but I wouldn't upgrade right now. Wait until you're out of school and your living situation settles down. It will definitely be easier for you!!
