How exactly do we have our selves to blame?

How is the oil industry being a monopoly that raises prices for no reason our fault? There isn't a shortage on oil right now or anything.

If we used less gas they would use it as an excuse to raise the price more. I promise you they aren't going to just give up on all the profit they are currently making.

I guess all natural resources are limited and therefore the prices will always go up. Luckily, where I live, we have decent public transportation, so I don't need to drive often. However, it's always a battle to spend money on things like that, especially when gas prices are low. Even here our transit system, while good in comparison to many places, still has suffered a lot of neglect. . Even ignoring gas, it's just such a nightmare to drive anywhere around here. It's definitely been busier lately though, maybe now they'll think about it more, who knows though...

Compressed natural gas is a great alternative. It burns cleanly, it's cheap, and it's domestic.
Big companies are starting to retrofit their fleets to run on it and they're starting to build their own CNG fuel stations where they need them. Seems like big businesses set the trend in the US so maybe that's where we're heading. The CNG equivalent of one gallon of gas costs around a dollar I think. Man it would be awesome to fill up my truck for 23 bucks. The only problem is the conversion which is pricey I'm sure.

Anyone know how much it costs to convert a regular vehicle to CNG?

    1. I believe I stated our consumption is to blame. We drive unnecessarily large vehicles for our needs, etc. A soccer mom does not need an Excursion to drop two kids off at school and go to the grocery store. We do not carpool as often as we should. We design our cities so that shopping is on the outskirts of them (caused by large box stores), thereby causing downtown areas to become void of affordable shopping where residents could walk from store to store. We do not have regional mass transit systems. I could go on for a while. I lived in Europe for four years: reliable mass transit, a lack of big box stores promoting downtown foot traffic for shopping, efficient and reliable mass transit systems, taxes based on vehicle engine size - promoting smaller more fuel efficient vehicles. If you've never been to Europe, I recommend going. While there take time to notice the differences in how they value the environment and avoid waste as compared to our lifestyles.

    2. I never mentioned the oil industry, I mentioned OPEC, the source of the majority of the world's oil supplies. OPEC set the per barrel price, the oil industry is the middle man, they need to make a profit to cover shipping, labor costs, etc. Do a bit of reading on how OPEC unnecessarily manipulates prices.

    3. Supply and demand. It's not a joke. If there is less of a demand, they will be forced to lower prices to increase demand.
