I don't believe it would make a difference either way as far as nitrate is concerned.

yeah i guess it depends on how high the nitrates in the water are..

If you had a macro forest, maybe. But there's no way your numbers will jump once the lights are off. I've seen a jump when I've removed all the macro from the tank, but it takes awhile for that to happen. I don't see it on the first night.

I seriously doubt it is even measurable. Not only than most folks run a fuge on reverse lights and it does the same thing.

The only thing you measure is what is the balance. You always have nitrates being produced but you always have uptake too. So the first thing you would need to know is what is the nitrate production at night.... more, less, the same as the day? If you truly have no algae in the display tank, and you have zero nitrates on a test, and your fuge is doing fine..... then it just isn't going to matter. Perhaps if you have really high nitrates, and a tone of micro algae everywhere.... but then you have bigger problems and a many more effective ways of removal than doing watr changes at night versus day. Just my opinion.

I also do them when lights are off most times - but some week ends I have changed it mid day - no harm has been done since the water temp and salinity are the same. I only do weekends if I had to travel during the week. I only do 5 gal changes (in a 75gal)

I wouldn't be able to do a water change with lights off. How do you see to clean? Or do you just change the water without "cleaning".
