So I live in AZ and get sun about 98% of the year. Has anyone set up their system to run on a solar powered set up? I have no idea what it would cost, or how big of a system I would need. Just curious if others have done it and what they think about it.

I live in Salt Lake and get tons of sun too! I have looked into solar, but its pretty pricey imo. At least for a poor college student ;)

I got an estimate on it once. Estimate was for $13,859 just to run my system. I passed.

holy cow, that a lot. I know there are TONS of rebates out there right now, from what I hear they can cover about 50% of the costs.

Here is the rebate system that the power company offers:

    Grid tied customers
New PV systems installed within the APS service territory and tied to the APS grid can receive a one-time incentive of up to $3 per installed DC watt. When you combine these APS incentives with Federal and State tax credits of 30% and 25% respectively, well over half of the cost of your system can be paid for (Arizona state tax credit is capped at $1,000).

Depends on your state and power suppliers. Here there is none, you are left with federal rebates, which are next to nil. And to top it off, if you go full solar, our power company will not purchase energy back. Which is why no one here has solar anything ;) Plus, power is pretty cheap around these parts. It's water costs that are brutal.

people here do it, but you gotta drop about 50K to get to the point of being 100% on solar with some extra to put into the grid. If your planning on staying in the house for a long time its totally worth it.

What Pack's saying. Some power companies buy the extra energy you make back from you, while some don't. If you live in an area where you know you can make good money off of the energy savings and the selling the power back, then you could go solar. Going solar costs about as much as a car, but if you know that you'll end up with lots of cash in your pocket in the end, it's a good way to go. Meaning if you know you'll be in that house for a looong time and you can wait for the positive effects to come. Kind of like starting a business, it costs money at first but after a few years you start getting in the positive income side of things again.
