anyone heard of a skilter?

Hi,
i have a 29 gallon reef tank in my bedroom, and the Prizm that i have on it keeps us up at night. i'm getting a good deal on a Skilter 400...but i don't know anything about it? does anyone know if its anygood, is it quieter? is it too big?
I've also heard that there are ways to make a prizm quiet...again i don't know any and would appreciate some advice. If I do purchase the skilter, i'll put the prizm on a 10 gallon nano that i'm setting up...what do you all think?

The skilter is just as noisy if not more. It also does not skim very well. If price is an issue go to www.aquatraders.com and get the propak skimmer for $45, its a chinese clone of the bakpak skimmer

 

I have never heard one single positive remark about the skilters...sorry.:-/

 

Skilters are LOUD.
Performance is what you'd expect from something so cheap too.
Go with Raven's suggestion, or keep looking... don't stick with the Skilter.

 

My B/F is running a skilter on a 26 both front reef. IMO the thing stinks. It's noisy and doesn't skim very well. We had one running on the 29 at work and I replaced it with a SeaClone ( it was on the shelf, so I grabbed it.) The difference in the tank is amazing, and in reality I guess the SeaClone is working okay.

 

Try an AquaC Remora. I beleive there is a used one for sale here on 3reef right now!

I run a skilter 250 in my tank, but it is highly modified. Out of the box they are noisy, make lots of bubbles in your tank, and don't work well.

Unless you like tinkering like I do, follow all the advice above. If you like tinkering, look for my post on the mods I made...it works fine in my 10 gallon reef, quietly pulling lots of stuff with almost no bubbles! Beware...unless you have all the odds and ends around, the mod will cause the total cost to be higher than the better out-of-the-box skimmer. Of course, you get a pretty good power filter and sump out of the Skilter for that price...

 

they are not even worth the water that flows through them. i had one and i loved my sea clone when i upgraded. thats how bad it sucked....a sea clone was better and they suck.

 

I have a skilter 250 on my tank. Not the smartest move. It leaks. and I blame it for the wicked nitrate spikes.
Needless to say, with a lot of trial and error, and error, I still have it running, minus the protein skimming capabilities. I have a "real" skimmer doing that now. Don't skimp on equiptment. Get the good stuff now, or you will end up regretting it later, and upgrading.
