VDHILLON-if you deciede to go down the Helter Skilter route, might I suggest adding an air pump to the air intake to quite it down. (and don't forget to add a limewood airstone in the protein chamber to really get it going!)
Petguys has the best price on filters.
    Good luck!

    anyone heard of skilter

There is a lot of Skilter bashing but I haven't seen a post recommending a complete replacement. All that seems to be posted is a skimmer replacement. I have a very mature 50gal skilter equipped reef and I want to make it better. The problem is the tank was made to fit in my unused fireplace. I have no room for a sump only a hangon about the size of a skilter. Are there any recommendations that would do both mechanical filtering along with skimming?

Reviving an old thread, I see.

Aquarium in an unused fireplace. I'd like to see this. ;)

Skilters are crap. I like my Hydor Slim Skim much better. Great skimmer - produces some nice skimmate, quiet, and has a small footprint (about 3.1" x 3.1", needs 11" water depth).

This is an internal skimmer. It will hang on the glass using magnets, similar to Hydor does with their Koralia line of pumps.

Wow, that's an old thread to revive on your first post! The only thing I would say about skilters is there was a big thread of worst newbie mistakes, a few years ago on another forum. Many cheap skimmers, such as seaclones were up there, but skilters seemed to win hands down from what I recall.... just sayin...
