Laptop or desktop? If laptop, replacing the mobo will likely be very expensive. If a desktop, it should be cheap.

its a desktop. i dont know what chip it is but ill take a pic of the computer and the chip when i get home tonight. im hoping itll be somewhat cheap. even if i have to replace the motherboard and its not over a couple hundred id be ok with that because its a 4000$ computer so it would be worth it lol.

Alienware started out less than ten years ago, and was bought by one of the biggest computer companies these days, Dell. Alienware mixes both functionality and design, with its great pieces of hardware along with their beautiful and unique designs.Alienware products are great for gaming since they can handle gaming and many applications at one time with very few problems at all. The processors are always incredibly fast and powerful with these computers, often surpassing computers of similar prices. This way, you can play your favorite games and not worry about your computer crashing in the middle of an important part.

Doesn't make sence "replace heatsink or mobo" when chip is fried.
Seems like your bro was trying to OC it and wasn't doing it a right way. I never liked Alienware cuz for a price of it you can build really descent gaming mashine that will perform as good as AW, but for less money. If you need to replace mobo just make sure that it will support either Xfire or SLI, depends what kind of VC's you have in there.

If the chip is the CPU, it's just a CPU that needs replacement. If it's a chip on the mobo (like northbridge), you just need to get a new motherboard. Either way, it shouldn't bee too bad, depending on what it is (Core2, i7, etc).

Be warned though, Alienware's lighting system (AlienFX, on the case) doesn't work without an Alienware-branded motherboard; the daughterboard that runs the lighting checks to see that the manufacturer field in the BIOS is set to "Alienware".

I feel like there's bound to be a way you could wire the lighting system to the psu though. I'm sure there would be a writeup floating around the internet somewhere. I can imagine alienware charges way too much for their mobos, like all of their products.
