At my lfs yesterday, I saw this guy here:

    Not dead of course...:)
Anyway, I looked it up and could not find anything relating to the care of this fish. I hear they are pretty rare and just now are starting to wash up on beaches in Austrlia. He seemed pretty swimmy and fast and therefore might have been better off in a 75 gallon. The man at the store said it would get to 8" (but then again, he imports rare fish, and he told me a beutiful emperor angel would fit in my 55 for 3 years:eek: (I thought he was crazy and did not even contemplate getting the angel BTW I never buy from there he just has cool fish)). I believe that since there is no info or history of aquarium care, he is one of those misfit fish (like hawaiian teardrop) that rarely (but unfortunatly do) end up at our local lfs:-/. Does anyone know more about this fish?

UPDATE: I do not plan on buying this fish and never did!

I just did some searches, it sounds to me like it's a deep water fish that doesn't move much, mostly just waits for prey to float to it on the current on the ocean bottom. One article mentions them getting up to 15" long with their "tripod" fins getting to be something like 3' long. Although who knows how accurate that is.
tripod fish information - Google Search

If it's acting "swimmy" I imagine it's because it's probably rather stressed at being in such a completely different habitat than its used to. Hopefully it was collected well and isn't suffering from some of the problems some deep water fish have adjusting to surface pressure etc.

I don't imagine it would be a very interesting fish to have in an aquarium aside from the novelty factor if it's natural behavior is just to sit around waiting for food all day.

Sorry, I do not think that is the right tripod fish, although thank you.

EDIT: Actually Fishbase is back up now. Here's some more info. Search for tripod there in the Common Name box.
