OK Inwall, I've conceded a bit on the DSB issue and buildup of detritus.....makes total sense (re: Old tank syndrome). I've gone to MSD (2") with the LR, etc. Now, did you siphon detritus in your 200g? Did you let flow take it up or readjust your flow?

LOL....usually I just siphoned. My tank was so low that starting a normal siphon would be a challenge but I had a python so that wasn't an issue. If I was in a lazy mood, I would just blast it with a turkey baster.

So you can siphon a MSB? I always believed the "experts" who said it was detrimental to a reef tank to siphon/clean because it killed, "all the good critters"? I've had DSB's for years without problems, but I don't want that one in a million chance that I walk in to my gameroom and my corals are wiped out!! Especially with my luck.

I had my tank BB for a while and it was ok. I also like the look of sand. I run a shallow sand bed maybe an 1 to 2 inches at most. Enough to cover the bottom and not have any bare spots.

What is the advantage of a bare bottom tank over a tank with substrate? Is it just so you can have more flow?

    Naw, it wasn't a MSB or SSB....it was a bare-bottom tank.

Yes. It get's rid of detritus to be filtered out. Also, many stonies look much better if they've grown in proper flow.
