I have a 40 breeder in my bedroom stocked with zoas, rics, frogspawn, montiporas, a few leathers, a couple scolys, etc.
It's loud. The water going into the overflow doesn't bother me, it's the water in the plumbing.

It doesn't bother me during the day but at night when I'm sleeping I hate it. No sense re-plumbing the tank since I might move within the year.

Does anyone see a problem with turning off the maindrive pump over night and using an MP20 to keep the DT circulated? I would add a heater to the DT as well as a maxijet or 2 to the sump.

I don't see the problem as long as you keep that water moving and oxygenated..
I'm not sure what will happen in the long run though since your cutting your filtration.
Let's see what other people say.

Is there something you could do to reduce the flow at night? This would keep everything operating, and may reduce the noise. Perhaps you would need to buy something to do this.

I guess doing something to cut down on flow would be a better idea. My original thought was that shutting down the main drive pump at night would give mr a good reason to buy an MP20. But in the same sense, adding a ball valve and tuning the return line down is also a good reason for an MP20.

I don't see much of a problem, as long as your heater is in the DT.
