Ask lots of questions, I just don't think the whole battery back up thing is a good thing to try and build for a novice. It's not nearly as simple as creating say.... an overflow shutoff switch with a relay cutting your AC power.

Battery tenders aren't designed to charge batteries under a constant load. You might be better off using a store bought back up and wiring your 12vdc pumps to an appropriate transformer plugged in to said backup.

Anyone else feel free to correct me if they think that is bad advice.

what if i change the battery tender to something like this Battery Defender 12 Volt 3 Amp Battery Charger: BatteryMart.com
    will it change things?

as of right now i am using a battery back up which was used for the uverse gateway. it has a 12v lead acid battery but only 8ah so it only last me a couple of hours. will changing the battery to a higher ah be a better option for me? thanks

Yes, higher ah will usually provide more time on an identical load. Make sure your battery fits, or you house it properly.
