I am new to the reef world...I am thinking of using Purple Up...basically it suppose to accelerate pink and purple coralline algae growth.

I have attached a picture for reference just in case.

Has anyone used Purple Up? What are your thoughts? Does it really work?

    Thanks,
    Nathan

If you keep your Ca around 460, your dKh around, say, 12 and your Mg around 1500, your tank will gain the color without the use of this product. I do not recommend it.

I have it, and I add it sometimes.
Really, though, now I just add Magnesium (epsom salt) to get the Mag to 1400-1500 ppm.
I add calcium chloride to bump Ca up to ~450ppm.
And I try to keep my Alk up 12-14 dKH using baking soda, sometimes w/ borate (borax) to buffer the pH if it's needed.
Just have those 3 parameters right, and with a little coraline algea, you'll soon have more than you want.

I like the stuff! I use and and have had good luck with it! It will only work if you have some coralline algae growth in your tank already, however!!!!!!!

3 of the reef-keepers I trust (local folks) state that they have used purple up in some tanks and in others just up their Cal. Same results out of both tanks.

I have not used it, but I keep my Cal a lil higher and have purple showing up everywhere.

I agree I use it also and have had great results with it, but with that said you should always test your water before dosing with anything.

I use it in my 16 gallon nano and I had some nice growth just before I took it down.

But I never used it in my 20 long frag tank. all I ever did in there was dose Calcium. There is so much coraline in the frag tank and its growing so fast on the frag rack you almost cannot see the black frag rack or through some of the holes.

I use it (just this morning as a matter of fact). People are funny about it and 'till this day I don't know why. Even has the extra benefit of iodine. I don't believe you need to test for iodine though (unless you want to) as it is probably a trace amount.

I've heard that it can increase the growth of unwanted algae, is this true?
