Just got a new nitrate test kit from API . Looks like the scale and directions have changed.
The new color card is different. Looks like what was 20(orange) is now 10
Also you must shake the bottle #2 for 30 seconds before use.
I tested with my old and new kits and it appears the actual liquid produces the same results.
So if you still have the old kit what you are reading as 20 is actually 10.

If you look closely - your comparing a freshwater scale with a saltwater scale.

Awe man.. looks like I ordered the wrong thing. I guess it doesn't matter I'll just have to use the old card.

Well... no. In the past I bought a whole reef kit and it didn't come with two cards. You guys should feel sorry for me since I'm a slow reader. At least my nitrate coil is pulling down the nitrates now.

I hate API Nitrate tests... so hard to distinguish between the different shades of orange/yellow, and the color changes as you move it away from the color chart. One of my RedSea tests say to compare the colors by having the color chart and vial 1 inch apart. When I did this with the API, the color becomes darker (more orange) when you view it from 1 inch away from the color chart (rather than side by side)

I know that probably didn't make sense, but someone might understand what I mean
